The Hackney Wedding Photographer
Some weddings are impossible to fit neatly into a box.
They’re not traditional. They’re not trendy for the sake of being trendy. They’re not trying to follow anyone else’s idea of what a wedding should look like.
They’re simply a celebration of two people, surrounded by the people they love most.
That was Louisa and Joel’s wedding at The Hackney.
The day began a short walk away at Mama Shelter, where excitement was already building. Friends drifted between rooms, buttonholes were pinned into place, and laughter seemed to erupt every few minutes. Looking back through the photographs now, it’s striking just how much joy there was from the very beginning.
As a documentary wedding photographer, those are the moments I love most. The unscripted ones. The moments that nobody plans but everybody remembers.
“Hi Alan,
I hope all is well with you. We’ve gone straight on from the wedding into trying to sell and buy a flat, so that’s taking all our waking hours. Take us a back to The Hackney!
However, in the midst of this chaos landed your photos of that most extraordinarily happy day. Alan, they are incredible.
You have totally captured the spirit of the day, the laughter, the joy, the specialness. I’ve watched the slideshow about 50 times. Tears were shed. We absolutely love your style, and you were so discreet on the day. I absolutely love the way you see what is happening in the room, and not some kind of glossy aesthetic fake thing. They are so real and alive.
You also, in one of the photos, captured the beginnings of what would go on to be a WEDDING HOOK UP which we were very excited about – and love that you spotted that happening.
It’s only as I write this that I realise how awful it would be if your wedding photos were bad. It’s a huge credit to you, I hope, that I just never doubted they’d be anything other than amazing. They are that and so much more.
It’s unlikely that the same group will ever be able to meet again in that way, so thank you for being part of that.
We’d recommend you to anyone.
Thank you so much.
Best wishes,
Joel and Louisa”
The Hackney was the perfect setting for a day like this.
Located in East London, it’s a venue full of character. Industrial features, hanging plants, exposed brickwork and warm lighting create a space that feels modern without ever feeling cold. It has a relaxed atmosphere that encourages people to settle in quickly and simply enjoy being there.
And that was exactly what happened.
Guests arrived chatting, laughing and catching up with one another. There was no sense of formality or stiffness. Instead, it felt like everyone had been invited into a celebration that reflected Louisa and Joel perfectly.
One of the things I loved most about this wedding was how personal everything felt.
The flowers weren’t subtle.
The personalities weren’t subtle.
The laughter definitely wasn’t subtle.
Louisa wore an incredible flower crown bursting with colour and sunflowers, whilst Joel looked every bit as relaxed and happy as the day unfolded around him. Together, they created a wedding that felt entirely their own.
The ceremony itself was packed with emotion.
Not the quiet, reserved kind.
The loud kind.
The kind where people laugh halfway through their vows. The kind where guests can’t stop smiling. The kind where the atmosphere in the room becomes so infectious that everyone feels part of it.
Looking around during the ceremony, there were smiles everywhere.
Friends grinning at one another.
Family members wiping away tears.
Guests reacting to every joke and every heartfelt moment.
One of my favourite photographs from the day shows Louisa and Joel holding hands and laughing together during the ceremony. Another captures the exact moment they kissed, surrounded by applause from every direction.
Those moments are why I love documentary wedding photography.
You can’t direct them.
You can’t recreate them afterwards.
You simply have to be there when they happen.
After the ceremony, the celebrations continued throughout the venue, with conversations spilling into every corner and guests making the most of the relaxed atmosphere.
There was a real sense of community throughout the day.
People who had known Louisa and Joel for years mixed effortlessly with those meeting for the first time. By the evening, it felt less like separate groups of family and friends and more like one big gathering.
The speeches brought even more laughter.
At one point, the room was laughing so hard that the speakers themselves could barely continue. Looking at the photographs, you can almost hear the sound of it.
That joy carried right through to the evening celebrations.
One of the things that stands out most from this wedding is how expressive everybody was. Nobody held back. Every reaction was written across people’s faces. Every hug felt genuine. Every laugh felt completely uninhibited.
As a photographer, that’s a gift.
Real moments become easier to find when people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.
And Louisa and Joel created exactly that environment.
Looking back now, what I remember most isn’t a particular detail or decoration.
It’s the atmosphere.
The feeling of being surrounded by people who were genuinely delighted to be there.
The laughter.
The warmth.
The complete absence of pretence.
Just two people celebrating their marriage in a way that felt entirely true to who they are.
And that’s always worth documenting.
