Behind The Frame: Mum & Daughter Kiss

It’s all for moments like this – that’s why I love wedding photography. To capture fleeting, special moment like this one – a mother and daughter’s embrace – well, it means just so much more than endless series of cold, robotic ‘look at the camera’ poses (which I never, ever do, by the way!).

This was taken during Nicola and James’ wedding, just before the speeches. The way I work is to always be on the lookout for moments, interactions, looks, laughs… just the gamut of human relationships, really. I think the art is to not only anticipate these, but to also react instantly – but, most importantly, to also capture the event in an artistic and compositionally creative way. That’s the art; that’s the challenge. In this case I knew a central composition, with the windows behind them, and exposing for a silhouette, would make this result. Choices all made within an instant of a second, or the moment would have been lost. As I said, a challenge, but it’s the challenge I thrive on!
