Polhawn Fort Wedding Photography, Cornwall
Eeeek, I’ve not blogged in a while again – just because I’ve been so busy actually shooting and editing weddings, rather than being able to show them here! And I’m not complaining about the business of course; I feel very fortunate that I’m being chosen by couples all over the UK (and world! Still have weddings from France last year, and Dubai this year that I haven’t featured yet!). But yes, it’s time that I updated my blog, as it’s been… well, a while!
Sam & Matt got married at the fab Polhawn Fort in Cornwall; the venue where I’ve actually shot at most in my career – love it there. Not many places where you can get married in an old Fort, with its very own private beach – can almost have a Mediterranean feeling about it at times, especially when we get that lovely Cornish sun…
Below are 10 100% natural shots; the kind of Polhawn Fort wedding photography that I really love – with some of my thoughts about some of the images too.
“We just wanted to say a huge thank you to you for our incredible photos! We cannot stop looking at them! So many details that we keep finding… absolutely over the moon!
It was amazing to have you do our photos and we cannot thank you enough.” – Sam & Matt
This one is all about the light (such fab light when you’re getting ready at Polhawn!) and the composition: Documentary wedding photography is all about capturing moments like this, but capturing them artistically and creatively; your photographer shouldn’t just be ‘plonking’ the subject in the middle of the frame all the time (unless there’s a specific reason to have the subject in the middle, of course). Slightly-off to the right, the darkness to the left of the frame is a nice contrast to the lovely light on the right, drawing your eye from Sam’s makeup, to the room, and back again.
Love capturing the First Kiss! I’m close here to get such an intimate capture; composing so I also include the guests clapping.
I don’t see the bouquet toss very much anymore; always enjoy it when it does happen! Here I’ve purposefully raised the camera high above my head so I can get Sam’s face, the ladies waiting to catch, and the bouquet itself all in the same frame.
They had some surprise singing waiters (always a lot of fun!), and I love this moment between Sam and her sister, singing their hearts out. This is what weddings are about: Relationships.
A little smooch during their First Dance.
Ah emotion! Capturing moments like this is what I really love to do. This is during Matt’s speech; I’ve purposefully included him in the foreground, so we know who Sam is reacting to – telling more of a story within the single frame.
Cassie is a fab caricaturist, and I love this moment of the ‘big reveal’! It was important for me to capture both the caricature itself, and Sam and her sister’s reaction to it – all within the same shot. Love their expressions too!
Close, intimate captures – the essence of what I do, really. A big laugh and moment between the bride and a guest. This is so real, to me; really feels as if you’re right there next to them.
Some ‘come and join me’ dancefloor moves from Sam!
And actually ending the post with another couple…! I *love* capturing moments of romance between guests – it’s not just the couple who feel the love on a wedding day. They had no idea I took this shot; I saw the moment, got in position with my camera high to include the sea in the background, and the massive benefit of having totally 100% silent cameras meant I could capture the moment without bringing them out of it.
