Horn of Plenty Wedding Photographer

There’s always a little extra pressure when the groom is a wedding photographer.

Not because they’re looking to catch you out, but because they understand exactly what goes into documenting a wedding day well. They know how fleeting moments are. They know how much anticipation, observation and timing are required. And they know when something genuine has been captured.

So when fellow documentary wedding photographer Mike asked me to photograph his wedding to Fiona at The Horn of Plenty in Devon, I was absolutely delighted – and, if I’m honest, a little nervous too.

Thankfully, Fiona and Mike made the job very easy.

As a Horn of Plenty wedding photographer, one of the things I love most about the venue is its intimate feel. Everything feels close, personal and relaxed, which suited this wedding perfectly. Rather than a huge production, the day felt centred around family, friendship and simply enjoying being together.

The morning began with a series of wonderfully natural moments. One of my favourite photographs from the preparations shows Fiona smiling into a mirror as her daughter works on her hair just out of sight. There’s so much warmth in the expression; the sort of smile that only appears when somebody is genuinely excited about what lies ahead.

“Just wanted to drop you a quick note to say thank you!

Firstly, thank you for your delightful (if seemingly invisible at times!) presence during our wedding. You were truly a pleasure to have around and somehow managed to make any awkward feeling I had of being photographed completely disappear! In fact, I barely noticed the camera most of the time, and yet I’m in so many pictures!!

And secondly, thank you for our photographs! They certainly capture the joy I felt throughout the day. I am so pleased with them all! They really do tell the story of our day. Mike and I will treasure these photographs as they really are a true reflection of the whole day, and all the feelings that we experienced!

As photographers, Mike and I are probably a tough crowd! Not only do we both feel more comfortable behind the lens of a camera, but we are also pretty fussy about what we like! Mike however was spot on when he showed me your work and said that you were the one he would trust to do a fantastic job! He was not wrong!! (At this point he’ll probably add that he rarely is! ?). You were, without doubt, the perfect photographer for us!

So thank you again!

Hope to meet you again…” – Fiona & Mike

Elsewhere, another lovely moment unfolded as a young flower girl received a generous spray of perfume from an older relative. The child stands with eyes closed, fully embracing the ritual, while the adult looks on with complete concentration. It’s such a small moment, but exactly the sort of thing that helps tell the fuller story of a wedding day.

Fiona’s personality shines through the preparations too. One image shows her clutching a cup of tea and laughing at something happening across the room, completely animated and full of energy. I love photographs like that because they reveal character. You can almost hear the conversation that sparked the reaction.

The ceremony itself was filled with joy from the very beginning. One of my favourite frames shows Fiona and Mike celebrating just becoming husband and wife, with their cheering guests lining both sides of the room. The low viewpoint and surrounding crowd create a wonderful sense of celebration and atmosphere.

What struck me throughout the day was how much these two clearly enjoy each other’s company. There’s a lovely photograph during the ceremony where they simply look at one another and smile. Nothing dramatic is happening, but the connection between them is obvious. Sometimes the quiet moments say more than the big ones.

The reactions of family and friends added so much to the day as well. One image captures Fiona sitting with a bridesmaid during the meal, both of them laughing uncontrollably at something being said nearby. Another photograph shows the registrar laughing during the ceremony while Mike stands beside her trying to contain a smile of his own. Those little reactions are often some of my favourite photographs because they can never be staged or repeated.

Being a documentary wedding photographer himself, Mike naturally attracted plenty of attention from friends and family who know him well. One image shows him carefully preparing before the ceremony, adjusting details and getting ready. It’s a simple portrait of concentration before the day properly begins.

The Horn of Plenty provides so many lovely spaces for guests to mingle, and some of my favourite photographs happened away from the formal parts of the day. One particularly fun image shows Fiona standing in a doorway laughing while her reflection appears in a mirror opposite her, creating a playful frame that seemed to capture her personality perfectly.

Looking back through these photographs now, what stands out most isn’t any single moment. It’s the atmosphere that ran through the entire day. There was a genuine sense of happiness from everyone present. No rushing. No pressure. Just people enjoying being together and celebrating two people they clearly love.

Photographing another wedding photographer’s wedding is always an honour, particularly when that photographer shares a love of real, unposed moments. Fiona and Mike created exactly the kind of day that documentary photography thrives on: full of laughter, connection and the small interactions that might otherwise be forgotten.
